Sweet Sugar-Free Green Tea Latte

Tired of spending money on Starbucks' Green Tea Latte? Try making this homemade Green Tea Latte for a cheaper and way more nutritious beverage! It's sugar-free and dairy-free!

For years, I was hooked on dark chocolate soy mochas. I haven't prepared anything with sugar for many years, but it took time for me to stop buying this sugary drink (I'd buy one almost daily at Whole Foods because having it in the home would be even more dangerous). The recipe I'm going to share, along with my Almond Chai Latte, was what helped me finally kick my mocha habit.

You'll notice the recipe calls for matcha powder, not a green tea bag or loose tea leaves. Matcha is the tea leaves ground into a powder. This is a stronger form of green tea - with more health-promoting phytonutrients and more caffeine (but still less than coffee beans).

Note, I am not advocating for caffeine. That being said, I do believe green tea is a healthier option for caffeine because the effects are less intense but more sustained. Green tea is rich in polyphenols, which prevent cell damage from free-radicals but may also help slow the absorption of caffeine.

Traditionally, the matcha powder is whisked with water to make a frothy beverage. It wasn't until Starbucks created the first Green Tea Latte, that cream and sugar were added.

Yes, the Starbucks beverage was the inspiration for this recipe, but this one is made with only whole foods—no refined sweeteners or nasty additives!

If you're a Bright Line Eater, note this recipe includes a few dates for sweetness. The amount called for keeps the level of sweetness to a minimum, but the dates can be left out if you prefer.
